Learning a new language can seem daunting or pointless to some. But it proves a way to improve every aspect of one’s lifestyle. As Frank Smith said, “One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way”
Traveling is one of the things most people like to do, and knowing the language of the region will ensure a unique, improved experience. And it is never too early to learn a language. According to a study realized by Pennsylvania State University, “Multilingual people, especially children, are skilled at switching between two systems of speech, writing, and structure. “(Penn State, 2011).
Additionally, being bilingual is seen positively within the labor market. When people look for employees, they want to hire the best, and this includes polyglots. According to a study from the University of Chicago, “bilinguals tend to make more rational decisions.”(Wooddruff Mandi, 2012), which makes them highly desirable for a variety of companies.
The lack of applicability for native English speakers is a reason why they mostly do not attempt to learn new languages. As observed by Frank Taylor, “Communication is one of the reasons people learn another language, but if you already talk the language you use, why the trouble? (…)most Americans don’t earn their paychecks off of international tourists(…)”.
Nevertheless the disadvantages that learning a second language may present, it is a life-time opportunity and a way to easily improve one’s finances, brain activity, and enjoyment.
