Dear Lucia,

The first time I communicated with another person in English was when I went to Los Angeles in June 2014. I went with my family who didn’t speak English, so I knew it was my job to communicate with others, it made me really nervous and scared. It was summer so it was really hot, and it made me feel tired all the time, specially because my parents made us walk a lot and all day long. At the beginning of the trip, I thought I couldn’t have a conversation with an American because my English was not good enough. I felt surprised but anxious when my mother asked me to negotiate the price of some Hollywood keychain on the street, near the hall of fame. The moment where I could translate from language to language, without hesitation, until I achieved a deal between my mother and the salesman; I understood that I was trilingual. The rest of the trip I tried to take advantage of every opportunity to demonstrate my family and myself that I could talk in English and that I had actually learned a new language.  At the end of the trip, I was proud of myself because I had not only learned that I was fluent in a foreign language, but also I learned about the universe in the planetarium, the story of Hollywood and much more just because I understood English. Every time we went to a museum and their was a tour guide I proudly said I wanted the one in English because I knew I would learn more in the native language of the tour guide, and I knew I would understand making me capable of translating the information to my family. This was an incredible experience because I realized how school was preparing me for the future.
